DIALINE SETS THE WATERJET CUTTING STANDARD AT ADVANCED PROFILING

Advanced Profiling Services are specialists in subcontract waterjet cutting of a range of materials.  The cutting head is the essential element of a waterjet process and is the point from which the company derives its cutting accuracy. The better the quality of the cutting head, the better the waterjet stream that is created.  This in turn increases nozzle life – one of the most expensive consumables for any waterjet company.

Originally, Advanced Profiling had a sapphire cutting head when it invested in its  waterjet cutting table and accompanying intensifier.  Although giving good performance, the replaceable sapphire jewel had to be replaced twice a week to maintain cutting consistency and was proving costly.

The company decided to move to a new cutting head with an embedded diamond.

However following routine maintenance, debris in the high pressure system damaged the diamond ruining the entire cutting head.  As the diamond is permanently fixed into the head, the entire head  needed to be replaced.

They chose to follow the recommendations of Wightman Stewart and specified new replacement AccuStream Dialine heads with replaceable rather than fixed diamonds.  These could be renewed in the future in the event of any damage to the head, giving a major cost saving over cutting heads with permanently embedded diamonds.  Another main attraction was that the heads could be simply fitted into the existing set up without any need for expensive adapters.

“I was sceptical at first, but when we saw the quality and accuracy of the Dialine head we knew it was in a different league altogether,” says Steve Jones of Advanced Profiling Services.  “The Dialine head really showed the difference when we had to cut some 200mm brass.  The edge quality was not important but speed was and we managed to get through it at 6mm per minute whereas our previous speed was only around 4mm per minute.”

Advanced Profiling finds that the Dialine heads never have to come off the machine.  This in itself probably saves a couple of hours per week.  There are two Dialine cutting heads on the waterjet machine and on average around 65 hours of actual cutting are undertaken per week.  It is some 4000 hours since any head parts have been replaced and the Dialine still performs as well as the day it was installed. The nozzle also lasts longer, which is a major benefit.

“Wightman Stewart was very helpful and even got us a Dialine head to look at before we bought it.  We could see the quality before we bought.  They really do know what they are talking about and give good advice.”
